Who We Are

Tom Albright - President and CEO

Tom Albright - President and CEOTom has over 40 years experience in hardware design and manufacturing for both thru-hole and SMT technology. He has been an entrepreneur since childhood and has formed 11 startup companies from 1970 to 2003.

During the 1970’s Tom started in engineering design research for the 3 - 300 MHz frequency range designing and producing the first solid state Single Sideband Transceiver in this range. He also worked in conjunction with the Los Angeles Police Department in developing VHF direction finding equipment for use in helicopters to track contraband goods being shipped into the L.A. area by truck.

He continued his work in emerging technologies and went on to design a fixed digital data network for the one way transmission of data using a 450 MHz radio link. By the late 1970’s he was actively involved in two way data transmission in both fixed and mobile applications using UHF and Microwave links. The data and RF hardware Tom helped develop was qualified by the US Coast Guard for use on their Cutters in locating vessels trying to bring illegal shipments into the US.

In 1978 Tom did a venture capital deal with Xerox Development Corporation and Bessemer Venture Partners. During this time he was instrumental in refining two way UHF data equipment and begun the research and development of a 900 MHz hardware platform specifically for the transmission of high speed data.

In 1980 he sold his company to a group of East coast Investors and was asked to stay on and design and implement a nationwide 930 MHz alpha numeric paging system. The project included the design and manufacture of Customer owned equipment. Tom also participated in the R&D of a cellular portable telephone at this time. He was responsible for leading a group of engineers that designed a display pager using Kanji characters. The unit was capable of displaying Kata Kana, Kanji and Roman characters intermixed all on the same line.

He has traveled extensively in Europe and Southeast Asia negotiating manufacturing contracts and the design and development of communications hardware and systems.

During the 1990’s he was involved in a services company focused on the design, manufacture and implementation of clients’ RF systems and other electronic and box build manufacturing needs. Additionally, he managed the manufacture of digital cellular phones for Ericsson and other broadband fiber optic video hardware customers. This electronic contract manufacturing Services Company, by the name of Circuit Board Assemblers, sold to Flextronics Int’l in November of 1999.

After selling the company Tom stayed on for 4 years engaging in Mergers and Acquisitions. He left Flextronics in early 2004 to form Carolina Design & Manufacturing and TTI Wireless. He is presently serving as president & CEO of the Company and is one of its major investors.

Tom has a B.S. degree in Communications and a FCC first class radio telephone license. He enjoys time at the beach, building model airplanes, working in the garden and talking on his amateur ham radio.

John Guerriero - VP of Engineering

John Guerriero - VP of EngineeringJohn Guerriero has over 30 years in engineering hardware, software, and support solutions. Early in John's career, while working at Grumman Aerospace, he demonstrated his drive and knowledge by designing a microprocessor base test system to catch Integrated Circuit failures prior to being installed in systems for the US Navy. The effort resulted in John's accomplishment being selected for the Project Sterling Award of the Year as the top employee contribution at Grumman Aerospace in 1980.

During his employment at MATEC Inc., John was responsible for developing factory test fixtures for Raytheon missile system Circuit Card Assemblies. In addition, John developed Automatic Test Programs for the next generation FAA Automated Air Traffic Control assemblies.

John continued his professional development working for Support Systems Associates Inc. a firm providing consulting services to military programs. Working as a Principal Engineer, John was tasked with finding innovative solutions to the test challenges presented by the complex Line Replaceable Units designed by Airborne Instrument Labs for the B1-B electronic counter-measures systems.

While employed as the Quality Assurance Manager for Test Program Sets (TPS), John was part of a team that demonstrated the first functional TPS integrated with the Depot Automatic Test Station for Avionics. The demonstration was conducted at the B1-B Central Integration and Test Facility and witnessed by high ranking Air Force personnel and members of Congress. The demonstration was the last milestone required by the Strategic Air Command to declare the B1-B program fully operational.

After moving to North Carolina John joined Matrix Corp., a company that specialized in providing ruggedized VME Bus products for harsh environments. John's initial responsibilities were to address issues related to moving new designs from engineering to manufacturing and design for testability. After developing plans, procedures and providing training, engineering changes decreased, test coverage increased and repair time was reduced.

As Matrix integrated the Intel Pentium processors into their new designs, John was tasked with BIOS development and customization on Phoenix, General Software and the Extensible Firmware Interface BIOS replacement.

John also developed software for VxWorks and Microsoft and was the Lead Software Engineer responsible for porting Linux OS to a PPC 405 VME processor board. John started the Raleigh Linux Users group in 1998 and maintained the web site for several years.

As an example of John's product development capabilities, he recently took an initial concept from a client and developed it into a system that accurately controls the clock in basketball games around the globe. This system has been incorporated into the rules of the NBA and the Olympics. The latest generation includes a 10.4” LCD/Touchscreen interface driven by custom graphics software running under Linux. Real time game data is sent via high speed network for monitoring and analysis. The design of the new system is Patent Pending.

In his spare time John is very active in public service. For nine years he has been the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) Emergency Coordinator assigned to North Carolina Emergency Management (NCEM). As an Extra Class KG4HDT, John is responsible for interfacing with NCEM and managing emergency backup communications at the Emergency Operations Center.
