Metro Machine Decides to go Wireless

Metro Machine is an award winning ship repair facility located in Norfolk Virginia. They have been conducting US Navy ship repairs and conversions since 1972. Recently Metro decided to upgrade both their access control and video surveillance systems. Due to the unique design and large layout of the facility a typical hard wire video system was not economically feasible. They decided to solicit bids for possible solutions from a number area integrators and decided the best possible solution was provided by Gaston Security, Incorporated out of Gasburg, Virginia.

Consideration for the system design was based upon a number of parameters from the protection from theft, to protection of US Navy personnel. Also, since the ship yard is accessible via local water ways, the system design also provides video coverage to satisfy concerns of Home Land Security. Gaston Security recommended a solution which utilizes Panasonic IP Cameras with signals transmitted over a wireless video system manufactured by CDM Wireless out of Raleigh, North Carolina. The existing video system is comprised of nineteen cameras both fixed and equipped with PTZ capabilities. Metro is so pleased with the quality of the equipment and clarity of the coverage they will be inviting Security Personnel from the US Navy to view their command control room. Metro has also decided to install additional cameras to provide surveillance of their remote parking locations as well as their alternate facility. Since Gaston installed Panasonic IP cameras they can all be recorded at their main command control center in Norfolk.

Metro was so pleased with the results achieved from their new video surveillance system; they decided to solicit a bid from Gaston Security to upgrade their existing access control system. Gaston Security decided to provide a product manufactured by Quintron Systems out of California. One of the main reasons for selecting Quintron was their ability to work with the integrator and customer in order to provide the unique custom reporting features demanded by Metro Machine. Another reason for selecting Quintron was to ensure the ability of multiple card formats. US Navy personnel will access the facility utilizing CAC cards where as shipyard personnel and sub contractors would be issued proximity cards. Quintron can easily incorporate the two card formats. There will be a combination of more than fifty CAC card and Proximity card readers throughout Metro’s facility.

According to Joe Eckel of Metro Machine, Gaston Security has been a welcome change from their previous security integrators. Gaston not only provides product of the highest quality but also pays particular attention to all details which allows us to receive the maximum capabilities out of the equipment.
